The UVA Jazz Ensemble is both a traditional big band and a flexible, extended ensemble that reveres jazz tradition while embracing its evolutionary, shape-changing nature. We follow the Duke Ellington model of a band as a family of individual voices expressing a common sound. Also, as Duke said, “If it sounds good, it is good!”
The students and director of the UVA Jazz Ensemble compose and arrange much of their own music. In this time of Covid-19, the Jazz Ensemble has reached out to various genres and musicians within our Department of Music, and to the Studio Art and Dance programs to amplify a recorded statement of unity and progress in the face of calamity; as jazz music has always done.
